Living Construction at Northumbria University (UNN), pioneers the integration of living systems into architecture through microbial biotechnology and biofabrication. The group’s expertise in MICP and other living material systems drives innovation in sustainable, self-forming, and low-carbon construction materials, bridging design, biology, and engineering to redefine how buildings grow and perform.

The role in the project: UNN leads WP2, developing MICP-based bio-composites using local bacteria and agricultural residues. It isolates and characterises strains, optimises green-moulding and cementation processes, and supports Cresco in scaling bioprocesses for prototype fibreboards.
